ElderSource is a network of coordinated services provided to older adults in the greater Indianapolis area. With its partner agencies, ElderSource offers a range of services to support and assist older adults and their families as they adapt to the aging process.

In June, the Albert and Sara Reuben ElderSource program celebrated a year of providing services through Indianapolis’ only Naturally Occurring Retirement Community (NORC). And since July 3, all elderly and resettlement services are being handled by ElderSource. Learn more about ElderSource...

Helping Seniors Age in Place

"NORCs" -- or Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities -- refers to a variety of residential housing arrangements ... where large concentrations of older adults reside. NORCs exist in every demographic sphere -- urban, suburban and rural; and evolve naturally primarily through the aging in place of the population or through large-scale migration of seniors to particular buildings or neighborhoods. More NORCs to come to Indiana

In January 2007, the Indianapolis NORC, Elder-Friendly Communities (EFC), began a discussion of the NORC concept with Indiana’s Director of Division of Aging.  With state interest and commitment, in February, regularly scheduled meetings were in place to discuss and create the workgroup for a community-based project known as the “Communities for Life” concept, based on NORC goals, vision and purpose.

As of July, Elder-Friendly Communities is now under contract with the Division of Aging and in partnership with the Center for Aging and Community, University of Indianapolis, to provide technical assistance for NORC planning grants.  Awards of $75,000 each have been awarded to five applicants from around the state of Indiana for strategic planning, needs assessments and program evaluation.  The awards were to qualified applicants that demonstrated readiness to develop a pilot project.  The process includes several stages: assessment and planning, implementation and evaluation.

As technical advisors, EFC will offer to the five sites assistance to move their efforts in the creation of safe and secure neighborhoods that support and promote aging in place.  Through meetings, conference calls and site visits with project directors, stakeholders and residents, EFC will counsel, direct and problem solve for the coordination and implementation of the planning continuum.

Elder-Friendly Communities, the Indianapolis NORC, has been fortunate to have a comfortable working relationship with the Indiana Division of Aging.  Former DA director, Steve Smith, embraced the uniqueness of the NORC concept and allowed for the formation of a planning grant initiative. Director Smith included the NORC concept as a priority in his annual Division of Aging address. Megan Ornellas, current DA director, has continued to support our efforts and participated in the implementation of the planning grants to the 5 sites around the state of Indiana.  It is the ultimate goal of Elder-Friendly Communities to be a constant in the lives of Indianapolis older adults.  With the support of the state Division of Aging, we anticipate the continuation of our efforts.
