What is ElderSource?

ElderSource is a network of coordinated services provided to older adults in the greater Indianapolis area. With its partner agencies, ElderSource offers a range of services to support and assist older adults and their families as they adapt to the aging process.

Indianapolis Jewish agencies, combined, are the largest provider of services to the elderly (both Jewish and non-Jewish elderly) in the northwest area of Marion County and portions of Hamilton County.  Although each agency is separate and not-for-profit, all receive partial funding from the Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis. For this reason, the Federation created ElderSource to serve as the central planning and coordinating entity for all older adult services.

ElderSource Care Philosophy

The evolving needs of the elderly and their families to stay at home whenever possible, rather than to live in a care facility, underscores the importance of providing a continuum of care.  This continuum includes home and community-based services, as well as more traditional long-term care in institutions. Although services are provided by Jewish agencies dedicated to the needs of the Jewish elderly, all ElderSource services are available to persons of any religion, race, nationality, ethnic group and income level.

ElderSource-In-kind: Generous donations of furniture, artwork, computers and automobiles enhance ElderSource's programs and facilities. Should you have items to contribute, please call us.

ElderSource Volunteers: Our programs are enhanced by the goodwill of others.  Please call us to discuss various volunteer opportunities, from one-time projects to scheduled activities.

How Does ElderSource Work?

Once ElderSource is contacted, highly trained staff evaluate the current situation, determine eligibility requirements and make referrals for appropriate services. Each situation is addressed in a professional and confidential manner and with respect for the individuality and independence of each older person.  Whenever possible, both the client and family are involved in deciding upon the best care options. Callers will then hear directly from the agencies. ElderSource involves the client and family in all aspects of the decision making process.

What Services does ElderSource Offer?

ElderSource partner agencies provide many services that afford a continuum of care for aging adults in a variety of living environments.

Housing - Located in Northwest Indianapolis, Park Regency offers affordable apartments and related services for the well elderly. The facility welcomes older adults on a limited income who can function independently and maintain their own residence. One meal is provided five days per week, as well as transportation and social activities.

Home Care – Many older people are able to remain independent in their own homes with some assistance. Services and Service Packages are flexible so that care may be adjusted as individual needs change.

Adult Day Services – Adult Day Services at Hooverwood offer programs five days per week in a safe, home-like setting providing stimulating activities and opportunities for social interaction. Older adult participants can receive baths, medication administration, therapy (with a physician's order), and beauty/barber shop services. Transportation, if needed, is available within a five-mile radius of the facility.

Hooverwood - Hooverwood, the Indianapolis Jewish Home, Inc., is a 188-bed skilled and intermediate nursing facility specializing in dementia and rehabilitation services.  Hooverwood's rehabilitation department provides physical, occupational and speech therapies on both an inpatient and outpatient basis for individuals. Hooverwood offers two specialized dementia care units that provide a safe environment enriched with activities and dedicated employees.

Bill Payer Service – Older adults often need help sorting mail, organizing bills, budgeting, writing checks and balancing a checkbook.  All participants retain control over their finances and all services are confidential.

Consumer Assistance – Services cover a wide range from providing information and referral to helping complete government forms and evaluating housing options.

Resource Center – Provides information about local and national community services including federal government and benefit programs, tax rebates, health, nutrition, housing, and insurance information. A lending service of durable medical equipment is also available.

Home Delivered Meals – Referral and assessment for area programs including Kosher to Go and Meals on Wheels.

Transportation – Multiple resources provide scheduled trips to the grocery store, medical appointments and the Jewish Community Center. Certain boundaries and restrictions exist.

Care Management – Offers professional guidance to help older adults maximize independence and autonomy. Experienced professionals coordinate service delivery, guide decision-making, serve as a liaison to family and caregivers alerting them to changes or problems, and help access needed resources. Professionals are frequently called upon to help identify and resolve issues related to aging and collaborate with local service providers to ensure that clients receive quality care.

Consultations –  About 70% of all home health care is provided by family caregivers, most of whom have no formal support system.  ElderSource's experienced professionals can help families find solutions to problems that accompany the aging process. A professional consultation may provide answers for caregivers and older adults who need multiple services or who may not be clear about what they need or want.

Counseling – Trained professionals can help older people and their family members cope with the daily stresses associated with aging.  Counseling is available through the Jewish Community Center, other appropriate partner agencies, or in a client's home.

ElderSource Online – Lists current services, eligibility requirements, current availability and other resources. Click here to be redirected to the ElderSource homepage.
